HKU Ranked 11th in the World by QS — Interpreting the Trends Across the Four Ranking Systems

The University of Hong Kong (HKU)'s latest placings in the four major world university ranking systems, with historical trends, methodological differences, and the sources of ranking volatility.

# 0. Read this first: "edition years" mean different things in different rankings

Rankings date quickly, and each system numbers its editions differently. Get this straight before doing anything else:

Example: QS 2027 came out in June 2026 and THE 2026 came out in October 2025 — neither was actually published in its edition year. Whenever you cite a placing, you must state "which ranking + which edition year" together, otherwise the number cannot be checked against anything.

# 1. Latest placings across the four rankings, at a glance

On "best in Hong Kong": per the University's Research Services website, HKU ranks 33rd in THE 2026^※ and 11th in QS 2027, the highest of any Hong Kong university on both; across the QS and THE tables HKU has long held the top local spot, with CUHK and HKUST trading places behind it. But each ranking has its own definitions, so "No. 1 in Hong Kong" only means anything when the ranking and the edition year are attached.

What the four have in common: according to several official HKU announcements, the University's world rankings in QS, THE, and ARWU have each hit an all-time high in recent editions — QS 11th is its best ever, held for the second consecutive edition in 2026 and 2027^※, THE 33rd is up two places from the previous edition^※, and ARWU 67th is another record^※.

# 2. QS World University Rankings · historical trend

HKU's QS world ranking has climbed strongly in recent years: per an announcement from the Vice-Chancellor's Office^※, the QS 2026 edition placed HKU 11th in the world — its best-ever result — described as "a second consecutive year of record-breaking performance, following the rise to 17th globally in 2025". In the latest QS 2027 edition, released in June 2026, HKU held steady at 11th worldwide, level with the previous edition and matching its all-time best (per the QS official release^※).

Methodology overhaul in the 2024 edition: from QS 2024, QS made major changes to its methodology, adding three new indicators — "sustainability", "employment outcomes" and "international research network" — and reducing the weight of existing indicators such as "citations per faculty" (per QS's official guidance). In the first year of the new system many Asian universities saw their positions shift, so crossing the methodology-change boundary when comparing year-on-year should be done with care — the 2024 edition and earlier are not measured on the same scale.

A note on verifying the sub-indicators (re-checked Sept 2026): HKU's official release for the 2027 edition^※ lists only the names of the nine indicators — academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty–student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio, international student ratio, international research network, employment outcomes and sustainability — without disclosing HKU's scores or sub-ranks in any of them; the indicator-level breakdown on QS's own university page is likewise not publicly machine-readable. This page therefore does not guess at sub-indicator figures — the main text and tables below present only the overall ranks that the University has officially confirmed. ⚠ Source-grading note: the 2021–2024 figures in the table above are not restated year-by-year in HKU's official announcements; they are aggregated from QS's official topuniversities university page and admissions media, so they are secondary/aggregate sources — for verification please use QS's official university page^※; the 2025 and 2026 figures are directly backed by HKU official announcements.

# 2.1 QS's derivative tables: Asia and employability

• QS Asia University Rankings: per HKU's own summary, HKU is ranked 1st in Asia in QS Asia 2026^※; several outlets report this is the first time in over a decade that HKU has topped the QS Asia table (media framing — check against QS's official Asia rankings for confirmation).
• QS Graduate Employability Rankings: per the same summary, HKU's latest placement in this now-discontinued league was 10th in the world in the 2022 edition^※; the standalone table has largely been folded into the "employment outcomes" indicator of the main QS ranking, and updates of the separate list have become less frequent.

# 3. THE World University Rankings · historical trend

According to an HKU announcement^※, THE 2026 places HKU 33rd in the world, up two places from the previous edition and again the highest of any Hong Kong university.

Per HKU's Research Services summary, the University has been ranked among the world's top 50 in the THE world ranking continuously since the 2010–11 edition^※. The same summary lists HKU in three THE derivative tables: 6th in the THE Asia University Rankings 2026^※, 3rd in the THE World's Most International Universities 2026^※ (up one place from 4th in the 2025 edition; inside the global top 6 continuously since 2016; this edition marked the first time the top three were all Hong Kong universities), and 13th in the THE Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2025^※. These HKU official pages state their last update as August 2026.

⚠ THE and QS shared a single ranking between 2004 and 2009 (the THE-QS World University Rankings) and went their separate ways, each with its own methodology, from 2010. Placings from before and after 2010 therefore cannot simply be joined into one trend line (HKU's own summary flags this in a footnote).

# 3.1 What THE's methodology favours

THE's world ranking is a weighted composite of five pillars — teaching (reputation survey, staff–student ratio, doctorate-to-bachelor's ratio, etc.), research environment, research quality (citation impact), international outlook, and industry income (per THE's official methodology). Several outlets, citing THE, attribute the broad rise of Hong Kong universities in the 2026 edition mainly to teaching reputation, the doctorate-to-bachelor's ratio and staff–student ratio (media framing — check against the THE official university page^※).

# 4. ARWU / ShanghaiRanking · historical trend

ARWU (the Academic Ranking of World Universities, published in Chinese as the 软科世界大学学术排名) is produced by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. It ranks purely on objective research outputs — Nobel and Fields Medal alumni and faculty, highly cited researchers, papers in Nature/Science, and papers indexed in SCIE/SSCI — with no reputation surveys, and is therefore the most methodologically distant from QS and THE.

Per HKU's 2024 ARWU announcement^※, the University "rose 19 places to 69th globally" in the 2024 edition; the 2025 announcement^※ says it "rose a further 2 places to 67th". Because ARWU leans heavily on accumulated papers and prizes, year-on-year swings are usually smaller than in QS/THE; a single 19-place jump is therefore unusual and is typically driven by methodological adjustments and updates to the highly-cited researcher lists (methodology details are available on the ShanghaiRanking website).

# 5. U.S. News Best Global Universities

The Best Global Universities table from U.S. News & World Report is built mainly on bibliometric indicators (global and regional research reputation, publication volume, citations, share of highly cited papers, international collaboration, etc.), with no undergraduate teaching or employment outcomes at all — it is a different ranking from the publisher's famous "Best Colleges" list for American universities, and the two must not be conflated.

• Per the official U.S. News university profile^※, HKU is ranked 40th in the world in the latest 2026–2027 Best Global Universities edition (the table rolls forward continuously as data are updated, so the authoritative figure is whatever the official profile displays at the time of reading; this edition's placing is also cross-confirmed by the official U.S. News release^※ and multiple media summaries).
• ⚠ On number drift and disagreements between aggregators: third-party aggregation sites have disagreed about HKU's placing in the U.S. News overall table (some record roughly 40-something in the world, others around 80), most likely because they cite different edition years or muddle the overall table with a regional or subject table. For this edition (2026–2027), official release and multiple cross-sources agree on 40th in the world; this site nonetheless does not trust any single aggregator figure — please take the placing shown at the time on the official U.S. News profile^※ above as authoritative: it is the only real-time source of record for this ranking.
• U.S. News's subject tables have their own highlights (HKU has held global No. 1 in "Education and Educational Research" for several consecutive years) — see Subject Rankings.

# 6. All five Hong Kong research universities on QS/THE: is HKU's lead shrinking or growing?

The answer: across the latest QS 2027 and THE 2026 overall tables, HKU remains comfortably top among Hong Kong's five research universities — but the gap is closing. CUHK broke into the world's top 20 in one leap on QS 2027, and HKUST posted the biggest rise in Hong Kong on THE 2026. Looking only at HKU's own numbers misses this wider local picture, so this section places all five institutions on a single table.

Two threads run through this table. First, HKU's lead is not the same size on both rankings. On QS 2027, HKU (11th) sits seven places clear of second-placed CUHK (18th) — a visible margin; but on THE 2026 HKU (33rd) is only eight places ahead of CUHK (41st), while HKUST (58th) closed by eight places in a single year — if HKUST keeps up that pace, the fight for Hong Kong's No. 2 spot on THE will be tighter than it is on QS. Second, six Hong Kong universities entered the THE global top 200 together for the first time this round — a record for the ranking^※; THE's Chief Global Affairs Officer Phil Baty described this as a "dramatic and accelerating" shift in research power "from traditional Western powerhouses to institutions in Asia". HKU is at the front of that regional upswing, but "best in Hong Kong" is not the same as "streets ahead" — the pace at which CUHK and HKUST are closing in is worth watching. # 7. HKU in other world rankings: the QS Sustainability table and CWUR

The answer: beyond the four mainstream overall tables, HKU also leads Hong Kong in derivative/specialist rankings — but the baselines differ, and these figures should not be cited interchangeably with the overall tables. HKU is ranked 1st in Hong Kong and 137th in the world on QS's Sustainability ranking, and 155th in the world in the 2026 edition of the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR)^※ (161st in the 2025 edition).

• QS World University Rankings: Sustainability: per The Standard's report of the 2026 edition^※ (published 18 November 2025), HKU scores 87.5 and is placed 137th in the world, the highest among the 11 Hong Kong institutions listed; CUHK (164th), CityU (212th), HKUST (230th) and PolyU (251st) follow in order. The table is built on three pillars — environmental impact, social impact and governance — and shares a common origin with the main QS ranking's "sustainability" sub-indicator (weighted at 5%) but is scored independently. It must not be conflated with 11th place on the main QS table: they are two different rankings.
• CWUR (Center for World University Rankings): CWUR, headquartered in the UAE, uses a methodology that is entirely output-based with no surveys (education quality, alumni performance, faculty quality, research output and impact, etc.). HKU is ranked 155th in the world for the 2026 edition (out of 21,291 institutions), with a composite score of 80.0^※ — a marginal improvement on 161st in the 2025 edition (out of 21,462), with a composite score of 79.9^※. Because CWUR excludes reputation surveys entirely and covers more than 20,000 institutions worldwide, its numerical baselines cannot be compared directly with the roughly 1,500–2,000 institutions covered by QS/THE. If you come across a claim that "HKU is 155th in the world" or "161st", first check whether the source is citing CWUR rather than one of the four mainstream tables (QS/THE/ARWU/U.S. News), so the apples are not compared with oranges.

# 8. Ranking volatility and methodology: a few rules for checking numbers

Rankings are constructs that depend heavily on which indicators are chosen and how they are weighted; the same university can sit tens of places apart on different tables, and that is entirely normal. When checking any HKU (or other) ranking figure, this site suggests you:

1. Know the ranking and the edition year: QS/THE label editions by "the year after release", while ARWU and U.S. News use their own conventions (see §0) — align the definitions before comparing across tables or years.
2. Know when the methodology changed: QS 2024, and various THE editions over the years, have overhauled their methodologies; movements across a methodology-change boundary may not reflect a real change in strength — sometimes it is simply a new ruler.
3. Know which kind of table it is: world overall ≠ Asia table ≠ subject table ≠ derivative tables such as employability or international outlook; HKU's "1st in Asia" (QS Asia 2026) and "11th in the world" (QS 2026) are two different statements.
4. Know the source: for any ranking figure, prefer the ranking body's official table or an HKU official announcement / Research Services summary; aggregator sites (including third parties not individually discussed on this page) are leads only, and the first-hand source wins.
5. Know the endogeneity of reputation surveys: QS and THE carry a large "academic/employer reputation" survey component; reputation is lagging and self-reinforcing, and when such tables diverge systematically from pure-output rankings like ARWU, it is rarely sensible to declare one right and the other wrong.
