Subject Rankings
The University of Hong Kong (HKU)'s subject-level positions across the four major ranking systems — QS, THE, ARWU (ShanghaiRanking) and U.S. News — highlighting the disciplines where it leads globally.
Data compiled: June 2026 (figures follow the "edition year" as labelled in each source below).
For overall (institutional) rankings, see World Rankings; for a deep dive on the five-year trajectories of the two major overall tables, see Five-Year Deep-Dive: QS and U.S. News; for indicator weights and methodology debates, see How the Rankings Are Calculated. The "edition year" convention for subject tables is the same as for the overall tables (QS / THE are labelled one year ahead). When citing, always state the ranking system + edition year + the exact subject name as used in that table: the same faculty is often classified under different names with different ranks in QS, THE, ARWU and U.S. News.

According to HKU's QS subject rankings announcement for 2026※, HKU placed 51 narrower subjects on the table, of which 29 ranked in the global top 50 and 8 in the global top 20. The eight "top-20" entries above come from that announcement.
1. Faculty of Dentistry: a Perennial Global Contender
The Faculty of Dentistry is the only dentistry school in Hong Kong, and dentistry has long been HKU's most striking subject in international tables.
| QS Dentistry edition | World rank | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 2※ | HKU announcement |
| 2025 | 2※ | HKU announcement (noting the rise from 3rd in 2024 to 2nd) |
| 2024 | 3※ | HKU announcement |
According to HKU's 2025 dentistry ranking announcement※, HKU Dentistry scored 85.1 / 72.3 / 97.2 / 95.6 across QS's four key indicators in 2025, with a composite score of 88.0, placing 2nd worldwide. The announcement added that HKU Dentistry "has ranked among the top three globally in nine of the past 11 years."
⚠ "Ranked Nth in the world" depends on the table: In QS, dentistry has ranked 2nd–3rd globally for years. But different systems (QS / ShanghaiRanking GRAS, etc.) use different subject definitions and produce different ranks; the common claim of "world No.1/No.4 in dentistry" floating around usually conflates different tables or different edition years. This page only reports ranks that can be traced back to the official QS subject table or an official HKU announcement, and declines to relay any "world No. N" that lacks a verifiable source.
2. Faculty of Education: No. 1 Worldwide in U.S. News for Years Running
The Faculty of Education has held the top spot for years in the "Education and Educational Research" subject table of the U.S. News Best Global Universities ranking.
- According to an HKU announcement※, HKU was again ranked No. 1 in the world in the 2025–2026 U.S. News "Education and Educational Research" subject table, marking, per the announcement, the third consecutive year at the top since the subject entered that ranking.
- The same faculty also sits high in other systems: per announcements from the University's Research Services office and the Faculty itself, QS "Education & Training" 2026 ranked 5th※ (the 2025 edition placed it 3rd), and THE "Education" 2026 ranked 7th※. ShanghaiRanking's GRAS (Global Ranking of Academic Subjects) also gives Education a strong position (precise rank as published on the ShanghaiRanking subject page).
⚠ "World No. 1 in Education" must be read with the system and edition attached: HKU's "education world No.1" refers specifically to the U.S. News table's "Education and Educational Research" definition. In QS and THE education subject tables, HKU sits between 5th and 10th, not 1st. "No. 1 / No. N in education" in different tables are not the same thing — always check which table is being cited.
3. Law, Geography, Architecture and Other Strong Subjects
According to HKU's QS subject rankings announcement for 2026※ and the HKU Research Services summary※, HKU also ranks in the global top 20–50 in the following subjects:
QS by Subject 2026 · Top 20:
- Geography: 11th※
- Architecture & Built Environment: 14th※
- Library & Information Management: 15th※
- Data Science & AI: 18th※
- Law & Legal Studies: 20th※
- Civil & Structural Engineering: 20th※
THE by Subject 2026 · Top 50 (per HKU summary):
| Subject | World rank |
|---|---|
| Education | 7※ |
| Medical & Health | 18※ |
| Law | 27※ |
| Social Sciences | 33※ |
| Engineering | 37※ |
| Physical Sciences | 37※ |
| Business & Economics | 40※ |
| Computer Science | 47※ |
| Life Sciences | 47※ |
HKU's medical school (the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine) ranked 28th globally in QS's "Life Sciences & Medicine" broad faculty area for 2026 (per a summary of the official QS subject tables; verify against the official QS university page※). Its Medical & Health discipline placed 18th in the THE subject table (see above).
4. Linguistics and More: Filling Out 2025's "Top-10" List, and Why 2026's List Looks Shorter
An earlier version of this page marked Linguistics as "no first-hand source available" because the 2026 announcement only published the "top 20." A check of HKU's 2025 QS subject announcement※ confirms: Linguistics has not disappeared — the 2025 and 2026 announcements simply disclosed their lists at different depths.
Bottom line: The 2025 announcement gave complete ranks for 4 subjects in the global top 10 plus 15 in the top 20; the 2026 announcement disclosed only 8 subjects in the "top 20" and did not break out subjects ranked 9th–20th (such as Linguistics and Sociology). That does not mean these subjects fell out of the top 20 in the 2026 edition — it is a difference in how much detail the University's press release chose to disclose.
The complete top-20 list as published in HKU's 2025 QS subject announcement※:
| Subject | QS by Subject 2025 world rank |
|---|---|
| Dentistry | 2 |
| Education | 3 |
| Linguistics | 9 |
| Geography | 10 |
| Social Policy and Administration | 11 |
| History of Art | 12 |
| Architecture and Built Environment | 13 |
| Civil and Structural Engineering | 13 |
| Law | 15 |
| Modern Languages | 17 |
| Sociology | 17 |
| English Language and Literature | 17 |
| Marketing | 17 |
| Data Science and Artificial Intelligence | 18 |
| Library and Information Management | 19 |
Per HKU's 2025 announcement※, of the 50 subjects assessed that year, 39 ranked in the global top 50 and 15 in the global top 20; HKU came first in 33 of these subjects locally (i.e. among Hong Kong institutions). Compare the 2026 edition — "51 subjects ranked, 29 in the top 50, 8 in the top 20" — and the number of subjects assessed rose by one, but the number of top-20 entries disclosed in the announcement narrowed from 15 to 8. That is a change in disclosure policy, not evidence of an overall decline in subject rankings; any specific movements must be checked one-by-one against the official QS subject table.
Four comparable items: Dentistry 2025 2nd → 2026 2nd (unchanged); Education 2025 3rd (as "Education") → 2026 5th (as "Education & Training" — QS itself adjusted the subject name, so the two are not fully comparable); Geography 2025 10th → 2026 11th; Law 2025 15th → 2026 20th. The 2026 announcement gives no specific rank for Linguistics, and this page states plainly "not disclosed for 2026" rather than speculating about rises or falls.
5. ShanghaiRanking GRAS: HKU's Subject Landscape Under a Different Metric
The ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2025※ assessed HKU across 50 subjects, using a methodology entirely different from QS's or THE's: GRAS includes no reputation surveys at all — every indicator is a verifiable bibliometric measure, such as counts of Nobel/Fields Medal laureates, highly cited researchers, publications in Nature and Science, and SCIE/SSCI-indexed papers. HKU's strongest subjects:
| Subject | GRAS 2025 world rank |
|---|---|
| Education | 4※ |
| Finance | 9※ |
| Transportation Science & Technology | 10※ |
| Remote Sensing | 11※ |
| Dentistry & Oral Sciences | 11※ |
| Civil Engineering | 12※ |
| Library & Information Science | 12※ |
| Geography | 14※ |
Three tables, three ways of reading, all consistent. Dentistry ranks 2nd in QS and 11th in ShanghaiRanking GRAS — both figures are real, but GRAS's "11th" is a purely bibliometric position, while QS's "2nd" draws nearly half its weight from reputation surveys (the same logic applies to the overall tables; see How the Rankings Are Calculated). Education works the same way: GRAS's world 4th, U.S. News's world 1st and QS's world 5th only give the full picture when read side by side. No single number can stand alone as "HKU's world rank in education" — only a claim that names the table and the edition year can be verified.
HKU's remaining GRAS 2025 subjects span engineering, medicine, the natural sciences and the social sciences (including Computer Science & Engineering, Clinical Medicine, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Economics, Mathematics and others). Because ShanghaiRanking's official institutional page does not publish all 50 subject ranks individually, this page lists only the verifiable top 8 and omits the rest, rather than padding the table with second-hand aggregates.
6. QS Faculty Areas and the Faculty of Social Sciences: Another Layer of Ranking Within Asia
The 2026 edition of the QS World University Rankings introduced, for the first time, Faculty Area rankings published simultaneously with the subject tables. HKU's Faculty of Social Sciences is one of the University's strongest performers here: according to an announcement from the Faculty of Social Sciences※, the Faculty ranked 22nd in the world and 5th in Asia in QS's "Social Sciences & Management" faculty area.
The same announcement gives the Faculty's subject ranks within Asia (the QS Faculty Area ranking does not publish individual subjects' world rankings, only their regional positions):
| Subject | Asia rank |
|---|---|
| Geography | 2nd in Asia※ |
| Psychology | 3rd in Asia※ |
| Sociology | 3rd in Asia※ |
| Social Policy & Administration | 5th in Asia※ |
| Politics | 8th in Asia※ |
Geography's world-level rank (from Section 3's table: QS 2026, 11th globally) and Asia-level rank (this section: 2nd in Asia) are two different rulers for the same discipline: the world ranking places every listed institution on earth side by side, while the Asia ranking compares only institutions within Asia. The two do not contradict each other, but when quoting, you must state whether it is "Nth in the world" or "Nth in Asia" — one more trap that makes subject tables easier to misread than the overall tables (more in the next section). For the rise and fall of HKU's position in the overall Asia table, see The "Asian No. 1" That Was Lost and Regained.
7. Methodology and Definitions: Why Subject Tables Are Easier to Misread Than Overall Rankings
Subject tables carry more pitfalls than the overall rankings. When checking figures, bear in mind:
- Subject names differ across systems: QS's "Education & Training," THE's "Education," U.S. News's "Education and Educational Research" and ShanghaiRanking's "Education" are four different subject definitions, with different scopes and different ranks. You cannot take an "Nth" from one table and apply it to another.
- Small samples and thresholds mean volatility: Each subject table lists far fewer institutions than the overall table, so small shifts in a handful of indicators can move a rank dramatically; a single year's rise or fall should not be over-interpreted.
- "World No. 1 / top N" must always name the table and the edition year: HKU's "dentistry world 2nd" (QS 2026) and "education world 1st" (U.S. News 2025–26) are each tied to a specific table and edition; a "world No. 1" detached from its table name and year is unverifiable.
- World rank ≠ Asia rank: The same subject has two entirely different measurements in "Nth in the world" and "Nth in Asia" (Geography, for example: QS 2026 world 11th, QS Faculty of Social Sciences Asia 2nd). When relaying a figure, always state which scope it belongs to.
- Disclosure depth varies by year — that is not a rank movement: One year HKU's announcement may disclose only "the top 8," another year "the top 15"; that is a choice made in the press release, not a change in the subject's rank itself. Linguistics in Section 4 is a case in point: the 2025 edition disclosed 9th place; the 2026 edition did not disclose a rank for it. You cannot infer "fell out of the top 20" or "no longer competitive" from that silence.
- First-hand sources first: For subject ranks, prefer the ranking body's official subject table or an official HKU announcement (University or Faculty-level). Where a rank cannot be traced to a first-hand source, this page would rather mark it "not disclosed" than fill it in from an aggregator site.
