Subject Rankings

Rankings ~8,009 characters · 17 min read Updated

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is ranked in the by-subject tables of the four major global ranking systems—QS, THE, ARWU (also known as Shanghai Ranking), and U.S. News—with a focus on its top-performing disciplines worldwide.

Data compiled: June 2026 (rankings are based on the “edition years” noted below).

For overall (institutional) rankings, see Overall World Rankings. The convention for “edition years” in subject tables is the same as for the overall tables (QS and THE are one year ahead). When citing, always specify the ranking system, edition year, and the exact subject label together—the same faculty or school often appears under different names and ranks across the QS, THE, ARWU, and U.S. News subject tables.

According to HKU’s 2026 QS subject ranking announcement, HKU had 51 narrow subjects listed, of which 29 placed in the global top 50 and 8 in the global top 20. The eight “top 20” entries in the table above are drawn from that announcement.

1. Faculty of Dentistry: Consistently Among the Global Elite

HKU’s Faculty of Dentistry is the only dental school in Hong Kong and has long been HKU’s brightest star in international subject rankings.

QS Dentistry Edition World Rank Source
2026 2 HKU announcement
2025 2 HKU announcement (noting a rise from 3rd in 2024 to 2nd)
2024 3 HKU announcement

According to HKU’s 2025 dentistry ranking announcement, HKU Dentistry’s four key indicator scores in the 2025 QS subject table were 85.1 / 72.3 / 97.2 / 95.6, with an overall score of 88.0, placing it 2nd worldwide; the announcement also states that HKU Dentistry has “in 9 of the past 11 years ranked among the global top three” (「在過去 11 年裡有 9 年位列全球三甲」).

“Global rank” is tied to a specific table: Dentistry has placed 2nd or 3rd in QS for many years, but different tables (QS, ARWU’s GRAS, etc.) define the subject differently and produce different ranks. Commonly cited claims such as “#1 in the world for dentistry” or “#4 for dentistry” usually arise from mixing up different ranking tables or different edition years. This page only adopts ranks that can be traced, item by item, to the official QS subject tables or official HKU announcements; any unverifiable “world No. X” claim is not repeated.

2. Faculty of Education: U.S. News Number One Globally for Multiple Consecutive Years

HKU’s Faculty of Education has long held the top spot in the U.S. News Best Global Universities subject ranking for “Education and Educational Research”.

  • According to HKU’s announcement, HKU was once again ranked #1 globally in the 2025–2026 edition of U.S. News “Education and Educational Research”, with the announcement noting that this marks the third consecutive year at number one since the subject was first included in the ranking.
  • The same faculty also places highly in other tables: per HKU’s Research Services and faculty announcements, HKU is ranked 5th in QS “Education & Training” 2026 (having reached 3rd in the 2025 edition) and 7th in THE “Education” 2026; it also ranks well in the ARWU Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) for “Education” (exact rank may be verified on the ARWU official subject page).

“Number one in education globally” must be understood alongside the specific table and edition: HKU’s “world #1 for education” refers exclusively to the U.S. News table and its “Education and Educational Research” category; in the QS and THE education subject tables, HKU places in the top 5–10, not at #1. A “number one” or “number X” ranking in education in one table is not equivalent to the same claim in another—always check the table name before quoting.

3. Other Strong Disciplines: Law, Geography, Architecture and More

According to HKU’s 2026 QS subject ranking announcement and the HKU Research Services summary, HKU also places among the global top 20–50 in the following disciplines:

QS by Subject 2026 · Top 20:

THE by Subject 2026 · Top 50 (based on the HKU summary):

Subject World Rank
Education 7
Medical & Health 18
Law 27
Social Sciences 33
Engineering 37
Physical Sciences 37
Business & Economics 40
Computer Science 47
Life Sciences 47

The HKU Faculty of Medicine (the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine) placed 28th globally in the 2026 QS broad subject area “Life Sciences & Medicine” (according to QS official subject table summaries; verify against the official QS university page); in the THE subject table it placed 18th for “Medical & Health” (see table above).

Linguistics: In previous years, HKU’s Linguistics has often ranked among the global leaders in the QS subject tables (entering the top 10 in some editions), but HKU’s 2026 QS subject announcement does not list Linguistics separately in its “top 20” summary. To avoid mixing edition years, this page currently records the exact rank as “not verified from a first-hand source” and will update once the official QS Linguistics table has been checked; it will not rely on figures from third-party aggregators.

4. Methodology and Caveats: Subject Rankings Are More Easily Misread than Overall Rankings

Subject rankings harbour more pitfalls than overall rankings. Please note the following when checking:

  1. Subject category names are not standardised: QS’s “Education & Training”, THE’s “Education”, U.S. News’s “Education and Educational Research”, and ARWU’s “Education” are four different subject definitions—their coverage and rankings are not the same. A “#X” position from one table cannot be applied to another.
  2. Small sample sizes and low thresholds mean greater volatility: The number of institutions listed in each subject table is far smaller than in the overall tables. Minor shifts in a few indicators can cause large swings in rank, so single-year rises or falls should not be over-interpreted.
  3. “World number one / top X” claims must always include the table and year: HKU’s “world #2 in Dentistry” (QS 2026) and “world #1 in Education” (U.S. News 2025–26) are each tied to a specific ranking table and edition year; a “world number one” claim stripped of its table and year cannot be verified.
  4. Prioritise first-hand sources: Subject ranks should be taken, where possible, from the ranking body’s official subject tables or official HKU / faculty announcements. This page prefers to mark a rank as “unavailable” rather than fill it from an aggregator site when a first-hand source cannot be traced (as with some Linguistics ranks).
